Marie Farrington and Sarah Doherty
Outside the System of Difference seeks to explore the creation of meaning and understanding through work which presents materials usually associated with other systems, uses and situations. Artists Marie Farrington and Sarah Doherty survey the metaphorical potential of material and the possibility to create new relationships of meaning through the divergence of scale, material and object. The presentation of these forms will create an unexpected dialogue between object and display thus challenging both ideas of function and our relationship with the things and spaces that surround us.
Developed with an awareness of the history, function, and physical space of the Joinery, notions of derivation and origin come into play through the forms taken here and their configuration in the space. The sculptures will confront conventional perceptions of the physical and the allegorical through the network of associative meanings which surround each item.
A panel discussion chaired by artist and writer Adrian Duncan will take place on the opening evening, May 16th, at 6pm. The discussion will explore concerns raised within Outside the System of Difference as well as an exploration of notions of description and processes of making. The discussion will feature Niall de Buitlear, Caoimhe Kilfeather, Tracy Hanna, and Barbara Knezevic.
This project is kindly sponsored by Dublin City Council and Dublin Institute of Technology and is part of LINK Culturefest
